Port Arlington is a residential and resort area located on the Bellarine Peninsula, with some surrounding rural areas. Portarlington is bounded by Port Phillip Bay in the north, Grassy Point Road in the east, Tower Road and Geelong-Portarlington Road in the south and a line running between Geelong-Portarlington Road and Port Phillip Bay in the west.

Development of the area dates from the 1850s. Growth was minimal until the late 1800s, when the area became popular as a holiday resort. The most significant Port Arlington Real Estate development occurred during the post-war years. Portarlington has experienced a small increase in population between 1996 and 2001, a result of new houses being added to the area.

Major features of the area include Portarlington Golf Club, Portarlington Aquatic Centre, Point Richards Miniature Railway, Steam Flour Mill, Flora and Fauna Reserve, Rotary Childrens Park, Western Park and Portarlington Primary School.
