Albert Park Suburb Profile Information

A leafy and residential suburb, Albert Park is located 3km south of the CBD. Formerly an area of swamps and lagoons, the main park, after which the suburb was named, was declared a public park and named to honour Queen Victoria's consort Prince Albert in 1864.

Whilst it is now a primarily residential suburb, there was little residential development in the southern portion of Albert Park until the 1880s, despite the beach being used for bathing from the 1850s. Since then, the suburb has acquired the necessary characteristics of a seaside resort, including a pier, grand hotel, and a seaside boulevard – Beaconsfield Parade. The suburb extends from the St. Vincent Gardens, where some of Melbourne's most sought after real estate is located, to Beaconsfield Parade and Kerford Road.

Albert Park has many attractions and the suburb is well known most notably for being the home of the Formula 1 Grand Prix. It also features the Million Paws Walk in May, classic car displays throughout the year, the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre and the Albert Park Golf Course. The 5km lake circuit is popular with walkers, runners, and cyclists.

Albert Park also features several shopping hubs in the area, most notably the shopping strips along Bridport Street and Victoria Avenue, offering patrons plenty of choices when shopping for clothes and food, and of course plenty of options for eating and drinking!
