Ashburton is a small yet well populated residential suburb some 14 km south-east of Melbourne CBD. Like many of its surrounding suburbs, much of Ashburton was formerly orchards and market gardens. Sections of the suburb south of High Street, the main east/west arterial connection, were constructed as public housing estates after WW2.
Ashburton is a fairly typical suburb - its residents largely mirror the profile for Melbourne as a whole. Real estate values have risen sharply over the past year from their historical low base. Real estate agents, who once promoted Ashburton to first home buyers, find an increasing number of houses for sale are now beyond the reach of the first home buyer.
Public transport within the suburb includes a train service to the city via Camberwell, good north/south buses along Warrigal Road on its eastern boundary, plus a local bus that provides access to Chadstone Shopping Centre. Access to Monash Freeway is available from Warrigal Road or at Glen Iris.
Three primary schools provide early education for children but they must travel to other suburbs for secondary and further studies.
The jewel of Ashburton is its vibrant shopping strip while residents- recreational needs are well served by the recreation centre and pool in High Street and numerous sporting reserves.
