Box Hill, Box Hill North, Box Hill South– Local Suburb Information

Early settlement of Box Hill dates from the 1850s focused around timber getting, fruit growing and vineyards. While the White Horse Hotel was open in 1853, substantial real estate development in the local area did not begin until the 1880s after the development of areas closer to Melbourne.

The most significant period of development in Box Hill came in the interwar period. Today Box Hill is a major commercial centre and transport hub for the mid eastern suburbs.

Major features of Box Hill include the Box Hill Central Shopping Centre and transport interchange, Box Hill TAFE, Box Hill Hospital, Box Hill Gardens, Box Hill City Oval, RHL Sparks Reserve and Surrey Park.

The real estate development of the Box Hill North area dates primarily from the post war period, its relative isolation from the railway line and Whitehorse Road discouraging earlier development. The most significant period of real estate development in Box Hill North was in the 1950s and early 1960s. Features of Box Hill North include Springfield Park, Hagenauer Reserve and the Koonung and Bushy Creek linear reserves.

The real estate development of the Box Hill South area dates primarily from the interwar and immediate post war period, its access to tramlines resulting in earlier development than Box Hill North. The Box Hill South suburb was the site of the famous painters’ camp of Tom Roberts and Frederick McCubbin.

Major features of Box Hill South include the Box Hill Golf Club, Kingswood College and St Leos International College.
