Following a recent re-alignment of municipal boundaries, Burwood lost a sliver of its former area west of Warrigal Road which was amalgamated with Camberwell. Today, Burwood's western boundary runs straight along Warrigal Road. Other main roads that form the boundaries of Burwood are Highbury Road to the South, Middleborough Road to the east and Eley Road and Riversdale Road to the north. Eight suburbs border Burwood including Ashwood, Glen Iris, Camberwell, Box Hill South and Blackburn South. A precinct within Burwood is called Bennetswood.
Burwood's 8.7 km2 accommodates 11,900 residents. Substantial areas of parkland and educational facilities contribute to the apparent low population density. Residents are typically older, work in professional occupations and do not make any housing loan repayments.
Burwood is located 15 km east of Melbourne with main city road access via Burwood Highway, CityLink and Riversdale Road. Public transport is primarily by tram along Burwood Highway from Vermont to the city, and Riversdale Road to the city.
Buses travel along all the main north-south roads providing local and network connections to other transport modes and all major educational centres. Melbourne's Smart Bus route between Mordialloc and Altona passes through Burwood. Ventura buses travel along Warrigal Road from Box Hill to Southland Shopping Centre.
Main shopping centres are strips of shops along Burwood Highway and Warrigal Road and a smaller regional centre in Burwood East at the junction of Burwood Highway and Middleborough Road. Burwood has a very decent coverage of schools and centres of advanced education. The ageing of the local population has led to a series of State school closures and openings as the educational facilities tried to reflect changing profiles of residents. Today, the suburb has two primary schools (Wattle Park Primary and St. Scholastica's Primary), a number of prestigious colleges including Presbyterian Ladies, Mount Scopus and Emmaus Colleges and the Burwood Campus of Deakin University.
The wide parkland areas and public golf course at Wattle Park on Riversdale Road provide an invaluable place for residents of Burwood and adjoining suburbs to visit. The Gardiners Creek Reserve also offers shared cycle and pedestrian paths.
