Camberwell is a quiet and established tree-lined residential suburb 13 km from Melbourne CBD in the heart of the Boroondara municipality, with travel time to Melbourne's CBD is approximately 22 minutes (less by train). Nearly 20,000 people were living in Camberwell during the 2006 Census in an area of 5.8km2 broadly bounded by Burke, Toorak, Warrigal and Canterbury Roads. Adjoining Camberwell suburbs are Hawthorn East, Canterbury, Glen Iris, Surrey Hills and Burwood.
Offering outstanding infrastructure with tram and rail access to the city, cross-town commuter connections, parks, large residential blocks, many stately period homes, generous parks and open spaces, Camberwell is a highly sought address which underpins property prices. The clusters of quality State and private schools, commercial offices and a vibrant retail centre at its "six-way" junction is also a major draw card for residents.
Trains from Lilydale, Belgrave and Alamein funnel through Camberwell station providing easy transport to many different areas of Melbourne and surrounding suburbs in most directions, while Burke Road trams provide an East-West connection with city-bound trams along Riversdale Road. Camberwell Junction has been the major cross-road of commerce since the 1880's and strips of shops along Burke Road offer a diverse range of merchandise and dining options as well as serving basic living requirements.
Camberwell is blessed with quality private schools within its boundaries or within easy reach in neighbouring Kew. They include Camberwell Grammar, Carey and Trinity Grammar schools, Xavior College, Canterbury Girls College and Fintona Girls School in Balwyn to name only a few.
