Donvale is principally about life-style living. Situated 20 km to the east of the city its 11,700 residents literally sprawl over the 12.7 km2 land area. Donvale's boundaries are neither linear nor organic. They run to the west of Springvale Road, with Reynolds Road as the northern boundary, Tindals Road and Mullum Mullum Creek in the East and the Eastern Freeway to the south. Suburbs that surround Donvale are Warrandyte, Park Orchards, Doncaster East, Blackburn North, Nunawading, Mitcham and Ringwood North.
Homes in this suburb vary from comfortable brick dwellings similar in design and character to those in suburbs to the west, to low-density housing with sprawling homes on large treed allotments typically on the eastern side of Springvale Road that were developed during the 1970's and 1980's.
The socio-economic profile of local residents mirrors the broader Melbourne patterns except Donvale has a larger number of school-aged children and families that are more reliant on private cars for their mobility - a single bus route is the only public transport for this suburb.
Donvale has two primary schools, Donvale Primary and a Catholic primary school (Our Lady of the Pines Primary). Heathwood School is a special school for secondary-aged students. Secondary studies are provided by Whitefriars College, Carey Baptist Grammar's Donvale Campus and Donvale Christian College.
Donvale is a suburb without a local shopping centre. Tunstall Square Shopping Centre lies just outside its borders, in Doncaster East.
The large plots of privately-owned land lend themselves to leisure activities and retirement villages such as Donvale Village also have the space to create a retired living community. The environmentally-sensitive Mullum Mullum Park reserve has been protected for future generations. EastLink was required to build tunnels under the creek and reserve instead of lower-cost, above-ground freeway to remove noise and visual pollution.
