Geelong Real Estate & Suburb Information

Situated on Corio Bay and just under an hour (65 km) south-west of Melbourne via Princes Freeway lies Geelong, Victoria's largest regional city. Geelong developed as the rail hub and natural shipping port for wheat and wool grown in the western district bringing wealth, manufacturing, service industries and economic independence from Melbourne. Today, Geelong has changed to become the service, education and road transport centre for the region.

Many of Geelong's finer Victorian buildings have been retained and restored. They form a popular tourist precinct that includes the National Wool Museum, Corio Waterfront, Eastern Beach and more than 30 historic buildings. The city's commercial and retail heart at Westfield Geelong and Market Square Shopping Centre continues to evolve.

The region has attained sufficient critical mass to support the local employment of many of its residents. New house construction is particularly buoyant in outer suburbs and increasingly visible in towns along the Bellarine Peninsula.

Transport to the city is via Princes Freeway or an hourly V/Line rail service from Melbourne city. Jetstar runs regular interstate services from Avalon Airport just 35 minutes away. The Geelong Bypass, being opened in stages, will increasingly divert traffic from inner city streets.

Education facilities in the Geelong region are extensive. The city and its suburbs boast more than 30 primary schools, 12 secondary schools and nine private schools and colleges including Geelong Grammar School, which is one of Australia?s oldest and most prestigious co-ed boarding schools. Deakin University has two campuses in Geelong - one at Waurn Springs and the other by the Geelong waterfront that attract thousands of students from the country seeking alternative study paths. Gordon Institute of TAFE extends the range of further education programs available in the district.

Numerous parks, open spaces and golf courses provide open breathing spaces around the city and suburbs.
