Hawthorn East Suburb and Real Estate Information

Hawthorn East is essentially a rectangular suburb located 8 km east of the city. The suburb is bounded by Auburn Road in the west, Barkers Road in the north, Burke Road in the East and Toorak Road to the south. A long-established suburb, comprising many timber and brick period homes and flat developments, Hawthorn East has roughly the same number of flats and units as it does houses.

The landscape of Hawthorn East slopes gently from the north to its south-west boundary. Part of the City of Boroondara its 12,600 residents live within a modest 3.8 km2 land area. Neighbouring suburbs include Kew, Kew East, Hawthorn, Malvern, Glen Iris, Camberwell and Canterbury. Most land use is for residential housing with the main retail concentration at Camberwell Junction.

Residents are spoiled with public and private transport options. Trams to the city run along Riversdale Road or in a round-about way via Burke Road. An excellent rail service, fed by three lines (Lilydale, Belgrave and Alamein) funnels through to Camberwell station then to Auburn station on its way to the Melbourne CBD. City access is provided by busy Barkers or Riversdale Roads, or Toorak Road which feeds directly into the Monash Freeway near Auburn Road.

Hawthorn East residents have an incredible choice of government and private schools both within and close to the suburb's boundaries covering primary and secondary education. Swinburne TAFE and University are located a short distance away off Burwood Road.

Shopping at the Camberwell Junction is no more than 4 minutes away from any part of the suburb.
