About Hawthorn – Suburb Profile

Hawthorn is one of the oldest areas in the Boroondara area, with development dating from the 1850s. Hawthorn Real Estate features a diverse range of houses for sale from workers cottages, Victorian and Edwardian housing to 1960s flats, these concentrated mainly in the suburb's west.

The Hawthorn area has a large student population, resulting from the location of the main campus of the Swinburne University in Hawthorn. Hawthorn is well served by public transport with the railway and various tramlines providing access to the City.

Other main features of Hawthorn include the Glenferrie shopping strip, Scotch College and Glenferrie Oval. The Hawthorn suburb's population has increased slightly from 1996 to 2001.
