Hawthorn Suburb and Real Estate Information

The opening of Victoria and Hawthorn Bridges over the Yarra River in the 1880's accelerated the development of this suburb to Melbourne's East, first as farmland and then progressively as residential suburbs with small pockets of commercial offices and retail and light manufacturing.

Hawthorn was the first new suburb to be developed in the East followed by Hawthorn East, Kew and Camberwell. Train and tram routes built in the 1900's remain the mainstay of Hawthorn's links to Melbourne CBD some 6 km away. Travel time to the city is about 15 minutes regardless of the transport mode chosen. Premium railway stations serving Hawthorn residents are Hawthorn, Glenferrie and Auburn.

Hawthorn's 20,000 residents are accommodated in a mix of dwellings and units. Many of the grand Victorian mansions have given way to more intensive flat development spurred by the demand to live in close proximity to the city, good public transport including north-south links, and the excellent shopping to be found along Glenferrie Road near Glenferrie Station. Even more retail bliss is to be found just 4 minutes away at Victoria Gardens Shopping Centre in Richmond or at Camberwell Junction.

Professional people represent the largest employment category. Hawthorn housing is heavily skewed towards rented units.

With Scotch College at its southern boundary and direct access to the many private and State schools in neighbouring Kew, Hawthorn has its own place in the educational limelight - Swinburne University of Technology's Glenferrie Campus located in John Street abutting Glenferrie Station.

Swinburne has forged an enviable reputation in its many specialty fields more recently with their School of Entrepreneurship. Swinburne students are spoiled by trains and trams at the doorstep.

Other educational establishments located with the suburb are three primary schools and Hawthorn Secondary College. Other private schools nearby are Alia and Bialik Colleges and Melbourne Girls College over the river in Richmond's Yarra Boulevard.

Hawthorn is well endowed with parks and sporting grounds - one of which was the home of the Hawthorn AFL football club. Larger parks in the suburb are St. James Park at the corner of Church Street and Burwood Road and Central Gardens behind Swinburne.
