Historically known as Sandridge, the area now known as Port Melbourne came into prominence in the Victorian gold rush of the 1850s. It became a thriving transport hub, and continues to serve today as a transport hub for passenger and cargo vessels. Many luxury liners, naval vessels and ferries arrive at Station Pier, including the Spirit of Tasmania service to Tasmania.
Located only 5km south west from Melbourne's CBD, Port Melbourne has become an increasingly residential suburb as the importance of the port has declined. The area has undergone intense urban renewal, redeveloping with a mixture of apartment complexes and medium-density housing, as manufacturing industries have moved out of the inner city area.
Port Melbourne has undergone a demographic shift over the past twenty years, with its population now a combination of a significant number of wealthy people, with those who live in public housing.
Many of the resident families came from Greece in the 1950s, whilst newer arrivals arrive from Africa and Asia.
The suburb has many sporting facilities, such as Morris Reserve Tennis Club and the Port Melbourne Cricket Ground. It is also home to many parks and gardens, including Edwards Park, Lagoon Reserve, Murphy Reserve, and Garden City Reserve.
The 109 Tram is an excellent transport facility, extending from Port Melbourne to the terminus at Box Hill, and is integrated with various train and bus routes.
