About Doncaster – Suburb Profile
Prior to large-scale residential development, Doncaster was predominately an
orchard-area. Initial development dates from the 1850s, when a number of settlements
began along the Koonung Creek. In the post war years, development in Doncaster boomed
as orchards were subdivided for housing. This development in Doncaster Real Estate
continued into the 1970s.
The suburb name of Doncaster comes from John Robert Wilson, who in 1854 opened the
Doncaster Arms Inn on the route to the Warrandyte gold diggings. The Inn was named after
his hometown, Doncaster, in England.
Today, Doncaster is a well-established residential and commercial area, with a growing
population. This population increase has been driven by the establishment of significant
numbers of new real estate and housing in existing areas. Over the next 20 years we can
expect to see Doncaster continue to grow with the development of the Doncaster Hill
precinct, located around Westfield Shoppingtown.
