Development of the Park Orchards area commenced as early as 1925, when
a portion of one of Tom Petty's orchards, known simply as "the Park" was
purchased for subdivision as a country club estate. The design of the
subdivision was undertaken by Saxil Tuxen, a protégé of Walter Burley
Griffin, inspired by Griffin’s Ranelagh Estate in Mount Eliza. The real
estate subdivision was initially unsuccessful; substantial housing and
real estate development did not occur until the 1950s.
Today, Park Orchard is an established lower density residential real
estate area characterised by large houses on large lots. The area's
population continues to grow, driven by the addition of new houses and
a relatively stable average household size.
