Point Lonsdale is a predominantly residential and resort area. Point Lonsdale is bounded by the Bellarine Highway in the north, Port Phillip Bay in the east, Bass Strait in the south and Fellows Road in the west.

Development of the Point Lonsdale area dates primarily from the late 1870s, following the opening of the railway line from Melbourne to Queenscliff. Gradual growth took place in the late 1800s, with more substantial growth in the early 1900s.

Significant development occurred in the post-war years, particularly during the 1960s. Point Lonsdale has experienced a small decrease in population between 1996 and 2001, the result of a decline in the average number of persons living in each home.
