About Queenscliff – Suburb Profile
Queenscliff – Swan Island is a predominantly residential and resort area.
Queenscliff – Swan Island is bounded by Swan Bay in the north, Port Phillip
Bay in the east and south-east, the Bellarine Highway in the south-west and
Fellows Road in the west.
Development of the area dates from the late 1830s. Growth took place in
the 1840s, with the township of Queenscliff established in 1853. Queenscliff
developed as a garrison town and strategic defence post, with fishing and
boating industries. Growth took place during the 1880s and 1890s, aided by
the construction of the railway from Melbourne and the tourism industry.
Expansion continued in the early 1930s.
Significant Queenscliff real estate development occurred in the post-war
years, particularly during the 1960s. Queenscliff – Swan Island has experienced
a small decrease in population between 1996 and 2001, the result of a decline
in the average number of persons living in each home.
Major features of the area include Fort Queenscliff, Marine Discovery Centre,
Queenscliff-Sorrento Ferry, Bellarine Peninsula Railway, Queenscliff Golf Club,
Swan Island, Swan Bay, Queenscliff Pier and two Queenscliff primary schools.
