Templestowe & Lower Templestowe Suburb Profile Information
Templestowe was established as a village on the Yarra in the 1850's and as such is
one of the oldest areas of settlement in the Manningham area. The village remained a
relatively small settlement well into the 20th Century, with the area outside of the
township remaining as orchards.
Substantial development of Templestowe began in the 1970's and 1980s, with real
estate areas subdivided at both conventional and lower densities. The lower density
areas are characterised by large homes.
Templestowe today is an established and maturing residential real estate area, with
an increasing population. This population increase has been driven by the addition of
new houses between 1996 and 2001, despite a decrease in average household size.
Apart from the original Templestowe township itself, the development of Lower
Templestowe preceded that of greater Templestowe. The area is predominantly a post
war suburb, with substantial development occurring in the 1950's and 1960's.
Lower Templestowe real estate today is a well-established residential area, with a
relatively stable population. An increase in houses between 1996 and 2001 was offset by
a decline in average household size.
